Should baby be placed on stomach or chest after birth? Nurse Jackies Tips for 6/1/20

You are finally having your bundle of joy! You have read and your delivery assistant has told you – that when the baby is born it should immediately be placed on your chest for bonding, but your provider places the baby on your stomach and not your chest – Do you know why? Which 2 are the correct answers?
- Your provider does not agree with bonding on the chest.
- Easier for the provider if the baby is in the abdomen as oppose to the chest.
3. Your baby may have a short cord and the cord should not be pulled on otherwise it can pull off and become an emergency
4. Your provider might be focused on something happening vaginally or bleeding from the uterus and needs to pay attention to that – so it was easier to place the baby on the abdomen first.

Can breast milk be stored?

Your plan is to feed your baby Breast milk only. Can Breast Milk be stored ? Which statement is incorrect ?
- At room temperature (77°F or colder) for up to 4 hours.
- In the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- In the freezer for about 6 months is best; up to 12 months is acceptable.
- Fresh breast milk or pumped breast milk should be used immediately and never stored .
Correct answer is 4 – You never know what the universe holds for you. Be prepared, have that extra supply of milk your baby may need .Â

You’re pregnant with a 100.4 temperature – what should you do?

Imaginary Case Study: You’re pregnant and you have a temperature above 100.4 for 2 days and you are coughing. What should you NOT do – there can be more than one incorrect thing to do. PICK THE THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO:
1- In case you are admitted to a hospital you should make sure the following people accompany you, Your husband, doula, mother and of course your best friend who is your support.
2-Â Do not go to your provider office go to your nearest hospital ER, and immediately let them know you have a fever for 2 days
3-Â You should go to your provider office to get immediate care
4-Â You should notify your doctor immediately
5 – You should use a mask or something that looks like a mask, wear gloves
6-Â You should make sure you distance yourself from others
7-Â Don’t forget to kiss you loves ones before you leave since there is a possibility you may be isolated
8 – Check other household people for signs and symptoms
9 – You do not have difficulty breathing so there is no need for any concern right now
10 –Â Hand washing or use of sanitizer is only necessary if you know you touched something
11 – For prevention of contracting the virus a mask should always be worn in the public whether you are sick or notÂ
12-Â You only need to wear a mask if you are infected or coughing, have a fever or signs of the flu or cold

Keep baby hydrated when breastfeeding: Nurse Jackie’s weekly tip for March 23 2020

How do you keep your baby hydrated when you are breastfeeding exclusively?
- Breast feed emptying the breast completely
- Pump and then feed the baby on that breast you pumped for 10 min
- Feed on each breast for 10-15 min or until your breast is only half empty
- Let the baby suck on your nipples only

Is your baby dehydrated?

It’s really hot outside. How can you tell if your baby is dehydrated and needs water?
- The Fontanel on the top of the head will be sunken.
- They will make suckling sound.
- They will suck on their thumb.
- Their stool will have blood in it.

Why is your baby Always hungry – jackies tip of week 2-2-2020

Your baby is producing adequate pees and poos . Your breasts are producing a lot of milk. The baby has a good latch on and you are positioning your baby correctly using body to body with the baby in proper ailment. You are feeding on demand. However, baby wants to be feed every 15 to 20 minutes continuously. Why is this baby so hungry? You can not eat, sleep or do anything but feed the baby. It’s like you are a 24 hour restaurant.
Question:
• Is this normal and called clustered feeding?
• Do you need to take this baby to the Pediatrician?
• Do you need to try and produce more milk?
• Should you try to change your feeding pattern ?
